Chronic Fatigue

Dear Lesley,

For the past 8 years I have suffered with chronic fatigue syndrome which has been very debilitating to the extent that I had to give up my job. My symptoms range from acute fatigue where I can't even get out of bed, to feeling like a complete zombie with a head full of cotton wool. I always seem to have a sore throat, I have no concentration, I can't sleep and  I feel thoroughly depressed that this is now my life. I can see no light at the end of the tunnel. Please help.

Thanks for your e mail and I do sympathise with you. Over the past 13 years we have helped many people with CFS which can affect anyone. It is estimated that CFS or ME, as it is sometimes known, affects about 1 in 300 people in the UK, possibly more and it's about three times more common in women as in men. The most common age for it to develop is in the early twenties to mid-forties. In children the most common age for it to develop is 13-15 years.

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel so let's try and help you. You may not think it at the moment but your body is an absolutely brilliant healer. It knows what you need by giving you signals. Think about it when you get a cut you heal immediately and your body knows exactly what to do. It's the same way with chronic fatigue syndrome and you just need the proper knowledge to help boost your body's healing abilities.

One of the problems with conditions such as CFSis that the experts can't seem to make their minds up as to whether it's an underactive immune system or an overactive one that's causing the problem. My personal view is that, in some cases its one and in some cases the other. There is no hard and fast rule and due to the complexity of the immune system it's difficult to ascertain. So, we have to look at it on an individual basis.

The first thing to do is to restore your immune system to working at the correct level. Many things can knock our finely tuned immune system out of kilter -- disease, stress etc and we need to always strive for balance in our body. Our supplement SIMBA, the African potato tuber, is rich in phytosterols (plant fats) which have the ability to restore normal immune functioning, depleting an over-active immune system and enhancing an under-active one. Simba will take around 6 weeks to get into your system and begin to take effect so you should take it for at least 6 months before assessing the benefits. It's a huge task ahead of a humble plant.

I would also recommend that you take a supplement called Vegepa. One of the key components needed to treat chronic fatigue syndrome is a combination of ultra-pure EPA (free of any DHA) and virgin evening primrose oil. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential for the proper functioning of and communication between cells in the body and brain. You can get it from www.revital.co.uk

Magnesium can also be very helpful. An underlying magnesium deficiency can result in chronic fatigue with symptoms similar to CFS. Low red blood cell magnesium levels, a more accurate measure of magnesium status than routine blood analysis, have been found in many patients with chronic fatigue and CFS. Magnesium supplementation has been shown to significantly improve energy levels, help concentration levels and reduce pain.
