For nearly 2 years now I have been suffering from catarrh/phlegm constantly running from my nose down the back of my throat.  My chest is clear, I'm not coughing, and I am otherwise very healthy.  I can't cough the mucus out and so am constantly swallowing it which is very unpleasant.

I have tried the usual syrups for catarrh/mucus coughs but they have made no difference.

I was wondering if there was anything you could kindly recommend that I try that may stop this finally?

Your advice would be very much appreciated.



Catarrh is generally a symptom of an underlying condition or infection and is caused by the body's immune system fighting infections or irritations within the cavities of the ear, nose, throat and chest. White blood cells are sent to fight infection which causes the cavity lining to become swollen and produce excess mucus.

Has your GP has ruled out nasal polyps?
Are the symptoms worse in certain environments or at specific times of the day or year? If this is the case, allergens may be responsible for the catarrh and you should have an allergy test.

Some people have blood vessels that are hypersensitive to certain triggers in the environment such as smoke, pollution, perfumes, paint fumes, stress, alcohol or spicy food. This hypersensitivity causes blood vessels to expand leading to excessive production of mucus, congestion and catarrh and this reaction is known as non-allergic rhinitis.

I would also buy a products called Allitech from Dulwich Health.

This is allicin from garlic and is brilliant for helping this condition.

Unfortunately, some foods can cause throat mucus and  the last thing you want to do is add to the problem. Milk and milk products like yogurt, cottage cheese and butter, cause excess mucus in the throat. These items carry protein molecules called casein which increases secretions of mucus and is difficult to digest. Along with milk products, caffeine, sugar, salt, non- herbal teas, (especially black tea), all create excess mucus. Soy is one of the most mucus making plant foods there is. People who give up meat and dairy and switch to soy products, have a greater risk of creating an unhealthy mucus build up in the body.

A spoonful of manuka honey and ginger can help the body to get rid of excess mucus. Cayenne pepper and chilli peppers will all help the body release mucus build up in the nose and throat. It is important to make sure you are plent of fluids a day to help mucus to pass through the throat. Add vitamins C, E and Zinc which are all helpful.

Gargle daily with warm salt water to thin out mucus and drink at least 8 glasses of pure water daily.  Another tried and tested way to get rid of excess mucus, is to add menthol and eucalyptus oil to a basin of boiling water and inhale the vapors which will help to drain the mucus from the throat and chest. Don't go out in the cold weather straight after though.
